Into the Desert, Into the Dark

“We have to go,” Fiona told Daphne. She tried to keep her voice low, but werewolves had excellent hearing. Jed didn’t bother to hide his disgust as he glared over Daphne’s shoulder at her.

“You just got here,” he protested. “Have another drink.”

But Fiona was in no mood for Jed or his creepy, controlling behavior. She shook her head and gripped Daphne’s shoulder, trying to convey her urgency.

She couldn’t let Lexi get away and tip off the other werewolves. Besides that, she might know where they were keeping Gabriel. Fiona needed to talk to her.

“One more drink probably couldn’t hurt . . .”

“No,” said Fiona. “We need to leave now.”

Jed shot her a contemptuous look. “Why don’t you cool your jets and have another drink?”

Fiona couldn’t help herself. She’d been on edge since they’d entered the bar, and that tension had been building slowly. She hadn’t noticed Jed’s pint glass rattling on the bar top until the tumbler exploded.

Glass flew everywhere, spraying Jed with beer, and the whole bar went quiet. A few of the werewolves looked around and saw the counter dripping with beer. One of the men started to laugh, thinking Jed had broken the glass.

Fiona shot out of her seat before Jed could lash out and headed straight for the door. She heard Daphne’s tremulous voice behind her, followed by Jed’s rumble of rage.

Cool air rushed into Fiona’s airways as she stepped out into the parking lot. She blinked as her eyes adjusted to the sudden darkness, but she couldn’t see more than a few yards ahead.

Fiona kept moving through the parking lot, wishing she had the werewolves’ night vision. She strained her ears for the sound of footsteps, but there was no sign of Lexi.

She couldn’t have gotten far, Fiona thought. She hadn’t heard an engine start, and she was fairly certain Lexi hadn’t changed into a wolf and scampered off into the night.

As Fiona rounded the corner of the building, she heard Daphne pleading with Jed. He was angry that she was leaving with Fiona, and Daphne was trying to placate him.

Fiona doubled back, ready to let Jed have it, when she heard the rumble of an engine. Headlights blinded her as a teal Grand Am roared to life and peeled out in a cloud of dust.

Coughing and squinting, Fiona ran to the Beetle. Daphne was waiting by the passenger door with a wounded look on her face.

“Get in. Hurry! We have to follow that car!”

A look of confusion passed over Daphne’s face, but she did as she was told. It took Fiona two tries to get the Beetle started. She knew she wouldn’t win in a high-speed chase — even against the old Pontiac. Luckily she’d seen which way Lexi had gone, and there was a long stretch of highway before the nearest turn.

Fiona followed her out of the parking lot, her hands trembling from the surge of adrenaline.

“Who are we following?” Daphne asked as the Beetle accelerated.

“The werewolf girl who came to my shop.
